Hi all,

Two things as the title suggests on my 97 MPI

1) The electric cooling fan fuse keeps blowing, does anyone know where I should start looking for the problem?

2) The upper engine tie bar has come off at the end opposite the engine. This happened when I changed my clutch slave cylinder, the bracket which holds the clutch fluid pipe, earth strap and tie bar was rusted through and came off with no effort at all. At the moment I've got it all held in place with three cable ties (!!!). Does anyone have any ideas on what's the best way to fix it and will it be easliy done or a job for the garage as I don't know how to weld.

Cheers

Ste

Im not quite sure which bit you mean has broken, but it sounds like you mean the tie bar bracket on the bulkhead, that sits under the master cylinders. If so, then you will need to get that welded, it happened on mine!

If you don't mean the above, a pic would help.

Did you do it yourself or get a garage to, if so was it exspensive?

Cheers

I had minidaves from here do it for me. So yeah, pretty much a garage. but anyone competent with a welder should be able to do it, but Dave did say he was getting frustated because like anything mini, space is at a premium and he did actually state that 'ideally' it would be done with the engine out. However, since having mine done engine insitue it has passed an MOT.

Edit: forgot about cost, its basically just labour mate, so grab a few quotes, i guess the more proficient the welder, the qicker and better job they will do. You need to get the bracket from a mini spares place though so they can weld it on.

If most places say they need to take the engine out - does anyone one know a rough price at a garage to do that?

Cheers

Hold on there, which bit has broken? If the lower part of the engine steady locating bracket (the part beneath the bar assembly) then yes that need welding back on but the upper part is just a plate fitted under the master cylinders and should be replaced rather than welded if that is what has broken. The master cylinders are bolted to the pedal box through it and it is a bit horrible having to remove all of that but that is the proper way to repair it.

Yeah it's the bottom part. The tops still pretty steady, I've managed to pass some cable ties through the top section and then through the tie bar and bottom bracket to hold the later two in place.

So definately a weld job then? Most likely the engine coming out to?
