Hey,

I was thinking I might try to make a boot liner out of fibreglass instead of the usual MDF ones, assuming it will be lighter.

I was thinking of using strips of MDF to make up a frame to fit in the boot, then removing it and putting fleece over the outside, coating in resin until it's hard, then removing the MDF frame and fibreglassing the inside.

A few things I'm unsure about at the moment, mainly that the boot opening is smaller than the boot so the finished article won't squeeze through it. :shifty:
Also, where on earth sells fleece?

I've read about sub boxes and big units that replace the rear seats as well as the boot space, but nothing about just boot liners. Has anyone else done this? If so, how?

Any suggestions about this would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Matt

Hmm, that only covers the boot floor. I'm looking to make a fibreglass equivalent of those MDF ones that cover the whole boot.

Am I right in thinking that fleece is used because it is highly absorbent and so holds a lot of resin thus making it stronger? If this is the case then I guess I could just use card and lots of fibreglass matting, right?

I though about just smoothing it out and spraying it, but when I go to tesco and get all my beer it would scratch. So it has to be carpeted.

I've decided I'm going to build it all up, then cut down the edges and hinge it so it folds in on itself for easy install and access to the spare wheel and battery.

I bought one of those gibreflassing kits from Halfords on my way home tonight, think I'll have a go with at re-doing the speaker board under the rear seat with it before I start on the boot liner. I'll have to go to somewhere cheap like Wilkinson and stock up on masking tape and parcel tape to stop the carpet getting ruined. I'm looking forwards to playing with the f/g.

I've just removed the speaker board from the car. Felt like I was going to break it whilst doing so. It's still very tacky. Even the bits I did at the weekend. The car isn't the warmest of places though. I'm going to shove it in the spare room for the night and most of tomorrow. We have guests over so the central heating will no doubt be on during the daytime.

Now that I have it in a good light, I've noticed that where I've tried to cover the MDF speaker rings in f/g it seems to have bubbled around it, rather than sticking flat to it. I'll have to file those areas down I guess and go over them again making sure they stay flat.

Regards,
Matt
