I've been offered a 1275 engine and box free(the only snag is its about 180 miles away) and want to fit this instead of my 998.
The engine and box are a few years old and haven't run or even been in a car for that last 10 years or so.
Where is the best place to start to strip and rebuild it? and what would you do with it?
Im planning on keeping it as a 1275 (unless budget allows (for budget read wife!)) and not really sure where to start.
I have a stage 1 kit fitted at the moment so its really only the engine and box to play with. :D :D

an old haynes manual is always a good read, personally i think the late 80's manuals are better than the modern ones but thats just me

If you are not sure how strip and build an engine i would highly suggest buying the ultimate mini engine builder dvd. shows you how to strip and completely rebuild a mini engine, they bore it to a 1380 but there is no difference really to building up a 1275, 998 etc....

Until you strip the engine you wont really know what it needs. I stripped and rebuilt an engine i recently bought. It needed new rings and i rehoned the bores and fitted a better cam, followers and new oil pump but used all the other origional components, even the shell bearings as they looked fine and its running perfect now although some people might disagree with this and suggest new bearings aswell.

It's not mate!

A stage 1 kit for a 998 won't be any use on a 1275 if that's what you mean. Or it won't be if it's any good anyway. A 1275 uses a different exhaust manifold from the type that is best on the 998, the needle supplied will be all wrong and depending on what inlet was supplied there may be an improvement available there too.
