The mini's been off the road for a few years, but now it's time to get it MOTd... But it has no power under load.

Just before it went of the road, it got new points & plugs. The engine has not been changed in any way.

It will start no problem and idles & revs OK.... but if I try to drive it it dies. (revs drop right down)

I've set the timing and set the carb with a colourtune, I discovered that the coil wasn't earthed so I fixed that but I've still got no power.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks
Mike

The Air filter looks not too bad but I took it out and gave it a wee try without it anyway, still did the same.

The Daspot's topped up.

The fuel tank was just about empty and I put a gallon of new fuel in it yesterday do you need to drain all the old fuel or is just topping it up with new stuff ok?

Sticky Piston... would this not show up when the engine's running without a load? If it is this, will it sort itself out or would I need to strip the engine down & Fix it?

I Did an oil & filter change last week.

ok, start the car as normal, pull the choke out and try putting it under load. if it is ok after that, this will tell u if its too lean (even though u have colourtuned it)

It turned out to be dirt inthe carb causing the problem ( I Hope) Cleaned the carb out and it's pulling well! Just need to get an MOT now!

Speaking of which, Does lead additive affect the emissions reading for the MOT? I'm just wondering if I should leave it out till after the MOT and just run it on straight unleaded just now...?

What do you mean you earthed the coil? The body of the coil doesn't need earthing, the coil itself earths through the dizzy and spark plugs and that's how the ignition system works. Don't directly earth it.

I had this exact problem with my car, it' turned out that the air to fuel ratio was all wrong.
then we took the mini to a rolling road and they sorted it all out. :-

That's what I thought! Someone told me that the body of the coil should be earthed so I cleaned it and the bracket up so that it has a good connection to the engine. It didn't make a difference but it looks much better now. :-
