Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a MED "Road competition" engine kit, and have asked what camshaft best suits my needs. Steve at MED has recommended me the newly developed Piper X/T cam.

I already have a Kent 286 cam (thanks GuessWorks) and that is the sort of cam I am hoping to use, if not the cam I will use, but was just wondering if anyone has any information about this new Piper cam?

I asked him about the duration and lift and he says it has 288 degree's duration with "40 lift". I don't quite understand. 40 what? I have been pestering questions out of MED for a few days now, so don't really want to keep asking silly questions!!

For reference, I believe the Kent 286 to have the following spec:
Duration: 280 / 290
Valve lift: 0.388" / 0.400" (9.85mm / 10.16mm)
Timing: 34/66 - 71/39

Although don't know this for sure.

Thanks!

PS: Thinking about it, the 286 surely can't have 280 duration, otherwise it'll be called a Kent 280, right? No idea. Just found it on the 'net somewhere...

sadly a lot of the older grounded 'old skool' cams (276/286,etc) are way out of spec, so often the manufactures figures are so out of whack they are more like a 276 (or 266).. notice these things when you measure them out - quite worrying!!

a few things need to be considered about cams - a lot of the time the only attention is given to the duration, but more importantly, lift on overlap, lift and rate of lift should be considered. these figures arent often produced.

For example the SW5 has a small ammount of duration (240ish), but has little lift on overlap (good), huge lift (good), and the speed of the lift is rapid!

ttfn,
Dave
