Hi

I am going for smoke grey and i am going to make up a batch of smoke grey (well as near as possible) hammerite out of smooth grey and black obviously. i am happy that i will need to make enough to do it all in one go or the colour will never be the same again.

questions???

how much do i buy if i will be painting the engine bay and bulkhead in this method, inside floors, inside of the bulkhead, the rear seat if the finish is good. i will get near to smoke grey then get the paint matched to it. i will do two coats over etch primer if this sounds good. it will be brushed into the nooks and crannies and then thinned down and sprayed onto the inside of the car and all four under arches again over etch primer or zinc 182 depending on what im painting on to.

let me know what you think. also i will put the black from a little tin into a large grey tin and mix her up. will this be ok to store the paint in after the mix ?? i assume so as it is a paint tin.

cheers

Ted

its pretty tricky to spray hammerite as it clogs your spray gun up..... Focus can mix hammerite any colour you want (you have to find the clever one who works there though(needle in a haystack)) the smooth stuff goes on pretty straight and you can thin it down and use a gloss roller to eliminate brush strokes. when thinned down it goes miles further.

The beauty of having a black car is that i can use stock black hammerite... i did the whole interior with brush on smooth, then flash banded it, did the whole underside, the inside if the boot then waxoyled it too... its handy having a spray can with it in too... but it clogs up really easy.

Yep, i had no problems at all. I used about 5% cellulose thinners with it. You can get hammerite thinners, but i found cellulose did just the same thing and a lot cheaper... Didn't have any problems with the gun clogging. The only thing you have to watch is that it doesn't dry as quickly as conventional car paint, so the overspray that hits the floor will still be wet, so put some dust sheets down or something....

Just 5% thinners? Surely that would be far too thick for spraying - Hammerite isn't exactly thin stuff at the best of times!

It really doesn't take a lot. Obviously that isn't a precise amount, but i think they recommend between 5% and 10% on the tin... Trial and error will give the best results, but don't overdo it, as it doesn't need much..!!
