I think he means what to put "on the engine" before he puts the engine in the car.

My advice would be to put very little on the engine, especially not those things that can easily be reached from above or the front. I have a remote shift gearbox. On cars with that transmission you have to tilt the engine at just the right angle to get it in the car. As such, I take off (leave off) the intake manifold and carbs, the dizzy, and the starter. Not only is it lighter this way, it's also got fewer things sticking out in the way... or sticking out to potentially get damaged. I tie the exhaust to the firewall tucked back as much out of the way as possible.

Check your speedo cable fits, as the Metro ones are often a different size... Its easier to connect this whilst the engine is up in the air, but check that the cable fits first...

Everything else can be done once the engine is in.

There is an additional point about the speedometer cable that I'd forgotten about. The Haynes manuals will tell you to partially install the engine and THEN attach the speedo cable to the gearbox. While there may be Minis where this makes sense... it certainly doesn't apply if your car has the center binnacle of the early cars. It's MUCH easier to attach the cable to the gearbox and tape it up/over the engine prior to installing the engine. After the engine is in place on its mounts, route the free end of the cable to the speedo and re-attach it.

Syholl, what is the Mustang in your avatar doing over there? That car looks great but it also looks terribly out of place in Europe.

I have always loved the American muscle cars, and the Ford Mustang in particular, so when i saw that 1970 Mustang fastback for sale i just had to have it. There is nothing else that sounds like a big block 7.5 litre V8... ^_^
