Question from a friend - anyone know the problem?

Whilst driving along, normally in 2nd or 3rd gear, the car judders and slowed down briefly, this is not a problem in 1st or 4th gear though. This persisted for a while and eventually the engine cut out completely, i pulled over and tried to restart the car, it wouldnt work. So i left it 5 minutes and it started fine and hasn't been a problem since. Anyone know if this could occur again and how to fix it?

Could be the coil breaking down.

First of all put some fresh engine oil in the carburettor dash-pot. Then replace the Spark Plugs (NGK are superb), HT Leads, Distributor Cap, Contact Breaker Points, Condensor and check the level of the engine oil too.

In fact treat the car to a full service (don't forget the air filter too) if it's due and use 20W/50 oil which will give the best protection for both the engine and gearbox (combined on a Mini). Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50 is highly regarded and can be obtained from Mini Spares.

Then see how it goes, but it might be worth getting it crypton tuned whilst your at it too.
