i have a block which needs a bit of work on it and was wandering about getting it dipped, is dipping just for getting the scabby paint and C**p off the block or does it clean out all the oilways as well, if so, are there any alternatives for cleaning out the oilways or is it just a case of paying to have it done? just looking at ways of keeping costs down.

Clean the oil ways the way your suppost to.
Drill out the brass plags, tap the hole and scrub the oil ways out with a long rifle brush.

Don't know if this is any help but look at this website 8 paragraph down. Will get rid of the rust in the block but won't clean out the oil ways.
Now, there is a cost-effective way to get rid of all the rust out of the block (and the cylinder head too) without any special high-tech tools. Simply mix up a solution of molasses and water (one part molasses to three parts water) in a plastic tub. If the mix is too thick to get into the water ways easily, you may need to thin it out a little with more water.
