Driving along... minding my own... 30 becomes a national limit, put my foot down abit and notice a knocking...

Initially I thought.. sounds like tappets need doing. As I carried on it got a little louder and I glanced at the oil pressure to see 0.

After frantically tapping the guage I thought I better get it up to the garage to check this out.

Changed the filter, no different, checked the pressure release spring, still intact.

Now Im thinking engine out and strip down.

Im having no luck this week.

Please, somebody tell me its something pretty damn simple.

Just asked a friend if dodgy fuel pump letting fuel into the oil could be causing this, but he says unlikely..

You don't say whether you've checked how much oil you actually have but I assume you have done. Fuel in the oil would indeed reduce the oil pressure somewhat. It would also be very dangerous and I hope that you haven't suggested that because you already know it is happening. An engine with a sump full of fuel/oil mix is pretty much a bomb that will go off at random.

to be honest if you've been driving it with the pressure at zero for any distance and it started knocking it probably needs to come out anyway. Could be rebuild time. Didn't the oil warning lamp come on and tell you to stop?

petrol has the lube properties of nothing, so oil and petrol aint much better and if you have been driving with an iffy fuel pump well your lucky to be alive.

engine and gearbox are now proberly scrap and at best crank grind and new ends and mains along with cam bearings and oil pump

so strip it all down and inspect or replace the complete engine

I think as it was getting louder then there's a good chance you've lost a bearing. Is it a tapping sound or more a rumbling sound ? Try getting a long screwdriver & putting it to your ear & then on different parts of the engine to try work out whether it's from the top or bottom.

Well if the engine need a rebuild, its going in the bin.

I will be putting the swift motor in there, but I need something to drive in the meantime, although I should be getting a loan car from the insurance within the next day or two.

My car has no oil warning lamp, Im using the centre 3 clock setup with smiths guages.

The noise started as a tappety noise then as it got louder and I looked to see there was no pressure, it was a good knocking noise around 3k rpm and when dropping down a gear etc.

I havn't actually checked if theres petrol in the oil as I left the car up at the garage last night and only though of it when I got home.

Oh and I checked the oil of course, it's on the full marker.

Ah well, sounds like scrap to me.

Cheers everybody
