Hi people, I hope someone can give me some advise.
My Mini (1985 1000cc Mayfair) has started making a horrible noise. I've narrowed it down to the driver side drive shaft, but unsure whether wheel end or engine end, but I think it's engine end. It sounds like something is getting caught every so often, maybe a stone or a piece of metal. When you turn the road wheel by hand when it's up on a jack, the wheel sometimes gets a little stiffer to turn.
It doesn't make a difference whether you are braking or not, nor does it make a difference if you are turning a corner or not. I've checked the brakes, they're ok, and I've been under the car, and the rubber boot both ends looks fine.
My question to you is, can I use the car for the next week or not, as I'm going straight from work every day to do make up at a children's theatre production which is about 20 miles away, every night of the week, so really need transport.
I don't want to damage the car, or lose control if something may be breaking, or even break down as the kids are relying on me, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Help urgently, noise from drive shaft!

Check you don't have stones stuck in the brake disc water shield first of all (if you have discs that is..)

if gearbox end sounds like a possibly drive shaft failure is possible as the splines on the shaft are worn and slipping in the cv joint (seen a few) does the steering get difficult at any time whilst driving? as that would indicate diff pin, either case i would recomend you get it looked at rather than driving it, because if a mechincal failure happens you have the possibilty of crashing.

EEK!! I thought that might be the case. I'll check for the stones in the brake area, but I do think it's the gearbox end. Rather than risk it, I think I'll get it looked at by a professional. Better safe than sorry and all that.
Thanks minidaves and dan for your help.
