Afternoon

I was just wondering how noisey it would make the car if you took the roof lining out? and what sort of noise if that makes sence, like just general road noise, or a vibration etc....

Also whats the story with fitting a sunroof? i know this is probererly a bad idea as once youve cut a hole youve ruined the roof!

But id quite like a sunroof! what ones do people fit ? like ones from modern cars, or make them? or is there a kit ?

Thanks for any help :)

Dave :(

I found the sound-deadening did make a considerable difference when in place compared to when it wsan't (especially in the rain!) the headlingin itself didn't do much,... but the sound deadening underneath did.

I'm going to be glueing some high density foam onto my roof before refitting the headling. worked a treat on my ex's mini.

Mini's (don't know if this applies for all minis but it did for my 1980 clubby) have a few bitumen pads placed there as standard which are ok.

I ran my Mini to germany the first year (2005) without a roof lining, and it was very noisy. Mind you it was caged up and fully solid mounted with a straight cut box which probably didn't help.

Once I got back I carpeted the roof using some carpet I bought from MITP, as well as the rear seat area, and it quietened it down a lot.

Ah right, so the lining its self doesnt do much, my other thought was, ive been in minis that have black roof lining, or no linging and the roofs painted black, and it might sound daft but it gave the car a smaller darker more "cosy" feel, which might sound weird but i thought it was quite cool!

Also i cant remeber but what do the edges look like, like where the pillars join the roof, does it look naff with no head lining in ?

:(

thanks!

Dave

ps. gav whats this flash band stuff ? and retro 10's by sound deadening, do you mean the stuff thats stuck to the rear quarter panels on the inside?

Flash band is black bitumen with one non stick silver side. you peel of a film backing, squidge it in place and use a hairdryer to get all the air out and let it mold to shape. i did my hole floor pan and bulkhead and put a couple of strips on the inner roof to stop resonance.

Yeah that would seriously suck if you cut the hole too big!!

Seriously tho lol, whos done it ? someone must have !:(

I think ill take the headlining out first, then see how adventurous i feel with the angle grinder.

Dave.

Ps, Gav, turn the estate into a convertible!!!! like the people carriers on top gear !!

My sister's first mini had a sunroof (I just went for a convertible mini) hehe..... But her sunroof was fitted by Rover and supposedly the best job you could get at the time, it was fitted before she bought the car.....

It was rubbish! Basically, if you're prepared to have wet seats every winter where the condensation drips off the glass onto your interior, then fine, but otherwise, I wouldn't bother! You really don't gain that much having a standard sunroof- come to think of it, I've had two 'modern' cars with leccy ones and hardly ever opened them!

A webasto full length roof is very cool... My sister-in-law has a late Cooper sport 5 with one, the only thing you have to watch with those is the actual roof fabric shrinking over time in the sun and curling round the edges!

Oh an I just remembered, our mini van Momo, also has a sunroof, fitted by the previous numpty who owned her (What div would do that to a van?) if we could have taken it out we would, but it was far too much work... The only problems we get with that are drips when you go round bends after it's rained..... :(

If the main problem is condensation on the inside of the glass, why not use a solid metal panel sunroof (like on the old style Vaxhall Tigra)? Infact I was eyeing up the Tigra's sunroof, with some minor adjustments and the metal removed from the roof of the mini, you could make a very nice electric two position sunroof, and have no problems with leaks or condensation! Also it wouldn't ruin the looks of the car as there would still be the original roof line, the only diffrence would be the thin black rubber seal marking out the outline of the sunroof.

I'm sure there must be quite a few old tigras or cars with similar style sunroofs in the scrappy by now, so plenty of donor parts. :(

You can cut a piece of polystyrene to the right size and squash it into the space where the sunroof meets your headlining....
That does help to prevent the condensation problems, but you have to remember to put it in there every night during the winter!

Assuming your mini, like most, does get slightly damp during the winter that is...? If you've got a super-duper completely dry mini all year round, then you might find you have no problems with a sunroof!
