Fitting a tow bar to 96 1275

Having just about got my trailer project sorted, I need to get a tow bar fitted to my mini.
I've just rung a few places for quotes and they seem astronomical !!!!
One guy told me he would need to remove the fuel tank to fit it so the labour alone would be £250.
Now a) having just taken one out of my trailer I know it's not rocket science and not THAT time consuming
b) is it truly necessary ??? or am I being potentially ripped off ?
My min's a 96 equinox so is a 1275 spi.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

just to answer you question though i dont think you need to remove the tank to fit a tow bar to a mini.

I know of three different types of towbar for a Mini and none of them require the fuel tank to be removed. Go somewhere else, these people clearly don't really want to do the work. Try a Mini specialist rather than a towbar specialist. Order a Towsure towbar (it's the best one IMHO, avoid the Witter one) and take it to them. Shouldn't take more than 2 hours to fit with a standard wiring kit even if they've never done it before.

But they wouldn't have it and said the product didn't exist anymore (and neither apparently did my car!) This was the sheffield office by the way.

Product BL61
Maybe you need to ask for a towbar for a British Leyland Mini.

Or try Towequipe, they are the other tow bar manufacturer I know of.
The Witter one definitely doesn't need the tank to move as it bolts to the bumper lip of the rear valence which is what makes it dangerous IMHO as this panel tends to rust very badly. They may be claiming that they need to move the tank to get to the left indicator wiring but it isn't really that difficult to fiddle the cable out past the tank.

I ordered one of these last night because of this topic and ive had an email back saying its on its way. I have a tracking number so, looks like its a good deal.
There are some numpties in this world who think that giving duff info is the norm. LOL ive had a lot of that in the last week.

Yes they did know it was a classic not a BINI but they still wanted to take the fuel tank out, guy was a bit of a prick actually, that alone should have told me to steer clear !
