Why is it squeaking?
it normally does it late when its damp, could it need tightening abit more, i replaced the alternator recently and if the bolt has come loose it may have adjusted slighty.
Its only very recent, but dont u hate people with that annoying sound coming from there bonnets. ARGH
Cheers guys

the fan belt om my 106 broke and the stupid mechanic must have put the rong one on because ever since every time you start it up it squeeeeks like poo, and the other day it must have snapped of because when we looked under the bonnet it wasnt there , so we called the AA and bought a new one from halfords and the guy fitted it and its so nice to not hear the squeeking on start up

Normally, either maladjusted or worn... to adjust just losten the alternator top an bottom bolts, using a lever between the block and the alternator, push it out... and tighten the bottom bolt...Check the tension, push the fan belt down between the Alternator and water pump, should get about 1/2 inch ( 10-12mm) movement.
If it still squeeks when properly adjusted, and the belt is in good condition, then either the water pump or alternator are worn..

Check the tension and also the condition of the belt. It shouldnt have the fabric fraying, the rubber cracked or highly polished or any other obvious problems. Also the pulleys should be nice and clean, and the belt shouldn't sit too low in the groove. If it is quite near the bottom of the groove it is worn out. Also check there's no oil (like WD) got onto the belt or pulleys. It seems obvious, but don't do any of this with the engine running.
