righto, as the title suggests ... i wonder if anyone knows an aprox measurement for a mini from bump stop (I have the later type at the front with the spacer on the stopper) to the top-arm ? I don't want to be riding on the bumpstops all the time as i don't want to have an aching arse or broken ball joints (pun not intended)! And, while some people recommend cutting down the stops to get the car lower, i don't want to do this either ... I just want it a little lower to fill my lovely group 2 arches  .

I did a search on hi-los, bump stops etc and couldnt find an actual measurement (if there is one and I havent found it, apologies). I have fitted hi-los and at the front there is about a 1cm gap between arms and bump stop at the moment ... this doesnt seem like much to me, yet the car is about right for ride height "look" !

... hmm, i have tried to do some research whilst waiting to see if anyone knows the answer ......

Mr Keith Calver seems to recommend that for a road car a "small gap" should be the lowest they go.

He gives measurements from sill edge (the sill ends immediately before the arch line/edge curves up) to floor
These being : 248mm front and 279mm rear for a 12" wheeled mini (10" 13mm less ... god knows for 13")

JoeBodge - So far, in fitting mine i set the front with a 25mm gap between bottom of the hi-lo unit (where the bolt screws in) to the bottom of end nut, 40mm at the rear. This gives a good aprox height to work from. I found this article helpful in installing my hi-los ....

this is where i found the other information, indirectly related to hi-lo fitment

thanks manifesto-mini - i couldnt wrk from my old measurements (pre hi-lows) as my cones and shocks are gone and it is actually sitting on the bumpstops.

whats the gap between your bump stops at the setting yo have at the moment then 1cm??
have you not found what it should be yet??
but surly if you lower the car on hi-lows the gap between the bumpstop and arm is going to be reduced? thats the point in lowered shocks isnt it???

at the moment i have set the gap at about 1cm, this does give the required look for my car (its not a street racing lowered beast or anything!)
i guess the idea is just to not be riding on the bumpstops all the time, by having the gap you at least give yourself some decent suspension travel. i would still love to know what the original measurement is for a standard car (i should have done this before i took the old cones off!!)... just to get a rough idea.

the lowered shocks bit i'm not sure about ... i havent gone with these, it depends again on how low you want it i think. At rest the car should sit in the middle of damper travel : i.e. middle of compressed and extended lengths .... so i guess its out with the ruler again ! this article

gives some tech data on dampers. From speaking to people at shows though, standard height kayaba gas-a-just are an excellent quality and all round shock.
