I have a 89' city e and the car can take quite a while to start. i have a ballast ignition system with a distributor. im not quite sure if it is an electrical ignition as im just a newbie to minis. i bought the car and it had a gold lucas sports coil, i've read that it is the wrong coil. can this have any affect on starting the car and which coil is the best to use?

cheers

Yes it can, it could be that the points are burning out. You need a ballast coil with ballast ignition, the Sports coil isn't compatible with it. Or it could be that the cranking bypass isn't fitted properly, there should be a white/yellow wire fitted to the coil and the other end of it to the starter solenoid cranking terminal. Or it could simply be the choke isn't setup properly.
