Here's the scenario, my mini runs on 4 star (leaded petrol) In Thetford, they have phased out 4 star, but i need fuel in order to take my car to the MOT station on monday. so my question is; i know that unleaded isn't good for my engine, but will it be o.k. for £5 worth in the tank or will it seriously fu#k it up?

LRP Question.

yes.. you should have adequate lead protection on the valves for short term unleaded use... but i'd be looking for some lead additive to put in in the near future.

Well that was exciting, just been out hunting for the illusive 4 Star and still couldn't find any, however I got 5 litres of unleaded came back, topped the car up. Then went out again to find the additive at the local car shop where we did a deal securing two bottles which treat 250 litres worth of unleaded.
So all that panic for nothing
Cheers for the info Gav, I thought it would do more harm than good.

4 star hasn't been phased out, it's limited in supply but it is still available. Bayford Fuels is still producing very high quality 4 star for classic cars and it is available at a fair few stations. The Leaded Petrol Website has a list of where Bayford 'Thrust' as it is called is available, you never know there might be somewhere nearby.

please remeber LRP is NOT 4 Star.... 4 Star is LEADED petrol and as Dan has pointed out, still available from selected garages...
LRP ( Lead Replacement Petrol ) has/is being phased out, basically as it's poo....it is unregulated petrol ( does not have a BS kite mark ) therefore you have no guarentee or come back ( unlike those affected by the silicon in the unleaded petrol from supermarkets ) if the fuel screws your engine, which it probably will...
If you have not got an unleaded head then you are better off using unleaded with an additive ( I would recommend Castrol Valvemaster Plus which also has an octane booster ) which should bring std 95 unleaded upto the same specification as 4 Star....
If you have a high compression motor, + 10:1 then I would use super unleaded 97 ron, and the additive.
