This is on behalf of 'starmag1275gt'

His car's never liked having oil. He had an oil catch tank plumbed from the timing cover with just a breather on top of the tank, after 20 odd miles the catch tank started overflowing - this is a 1 litre catch tank!!! So we thought we'd try something else, we plumbed the pipe off the timing cover straight into the carb, like they're suppose to be, but enevitably it just burns oil like a ....erm....... *something that burns lots of oil*

Cant figure out why its not holding oil. The reason its burning it is just because its being re-circulated back into the carb at the moment. The head has just been re-done, the bores are fine.. but that besides the point really. Its just throwing oil out of the timing cover breather, any ideas why?????? ;)

Cheers Dan

It's a long shot but check that nobody has removed the oil baffles from the breather unit for any reason. They are there to stop neat oil being thrown up the pipe but this is more probably mainly due to high crankcase pressure. If the breather pipes aren't completely blocked up (which they obviously aren't if oil can come through them) then high crankcase pressure generally indicates very large amounts of blowby from worn cylinder bores.

Another long but serious shot is do you know the history of the engine and has it been re-built ? If so and somebody has installed the piston rings incorrectly then this can happen !

My brother bought a TR8 rally car and during the first event we went through gallons of oil. When I stripped it afterwards I found the rings to be all wrong !!!

The two oil return holes in number one main bearing cap are blocked ;)
