i just found this forum after looking again at the Zcars site, i am going to be in the market for a car soon and have £6k to spend, i would love to build one but have a few questions

does the z cars type R kit price include the engine ?

what motor is used 2L civic engine or 2.2L accord/interga engine ?

what is the insurance like for a type R engined mini ?

if i used a pre 1972 bodyshell would it still be tax exempt ?

what is the quickest build time possible ? (evening and weekends only)

thanks in advance for any advise

Ring Z Cars to find out what the kit includes, and more importantly, what it doesn't.

The engine they mainly use in the kit is the 2.0l Civic Type R. I think its the K20?

Insurance, you'll just have to ring a few companies and see. HIC (Mini World Insurance) offer TMF members 15% off, although I know a couple of Z Car guys use Sureterm.

Yes, a pre 1972 bodyshell would still be tax exempt, unless you had to SVA it which led to a Q plate. Search TMF for details of SVA and Q plating.

Not sure on quickest build time, seems to take most people 8-10 months to 2-3 years!

And you won't be able to build one on a budget of 6k.

Non of the kits include the engine.
Expect to spend around 10k minimum to build any of the minis to start with.
Im on my second car now so have a bit of expierience with them now.

Good luck and cheers.

the cheapest kit we do is for the B16 and B 18 honda engines this costs £5500 you will need a B16 or B 18 engine say £300 to £500
these engines will run on the std ecu
if you use your initiative and fit rubber hoses from the scrap yard, instead of silicone hoses get wheels and tyres from E Bay etc etc you should do one of these reasonably cheaply probably under £7000 there will be things you would like to fit like bucket seats etc and again E bay and mini meets are good places to bag a bargain
the car will still go well in fact very well a mini with 160 bhp and good suspension and handling will always be a nice thing to drive and the honda engines go forever they can also be easily tuned to give 200 bhp with the right bits
my advice would be to get what you can afford and get it running fancy bits can come later

@Chris,

The price for the B16/B18 kits are 5500 ponds, you say. In another topic you've said the folllowing:

"you could run the std ecu and loom from the donor car and std exhaust which would save a further £1400"

Does this still counts???

if you compare the cost of the type r kit to the b 18/18 kit then they are the same for the kits but the savings come from no after market ecu and loom and a cheaper engine and gearbox in the first place
you wont be compromising the quality of your car as the kit is the same spec as a type r just the motor is cheaper etc
