I recently sold a young girl (17) a Mini City 998, being young she`s looking at various add ons. Tell me, all you under 21 types, what effect does say alloy wheels, Stage 1 kits have on your insurance premiums.
Do you tell your insurers that you have these additions fitted? and has anyone had an isssue with there insurers after not declaring any add ons that could be deemed as tuning parts.
I thank you!

My son is 19, he's with Liverpool Victoria insurance, he declaired everything that he's put on his mayfair ie stage 1 & RC40, rover minilites, twin post later mayfair seats, and a removable front.
Added no extra to his insurance still £1100 full comp but did put his excess up to £500, and that's for London/Surrey postal area.
They did ask him to put a Cat 1 alarm on it, and he's got it insured for £3500.

Why do people still insist on asking about NOT declaring things on insurance?
<rant>
You can't NOT run the risk of not declaring any modifications to a car. It is just not worth the risk. The insurance are well within their rights to invalidate the cover should anything happen. This is ALWAYS stated to you whether on the phone or in the paperwork so you would have no come back at a later date either.
If mods are not declared, especially what insurance would deem performance enhancing, ie Stage 1 kit, and the worst happens and she has an accident and kills or injures someone..... if the insurance find out mods have not been declared and invalidate the policy, not only will she have no insurance cover, no legal cover should the victim's family decide to sue but she will also be in deep doo-doo with the police for having no insurance. WHY DO PEOPLE STILL ASK ABOUT NOT DECLARING MODS.......IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO INSURE A MODDED CAR THEN LEAVE IT STANDARD. ARGHHHHHHH!
Every insurance company is different. The only way to find out whether premiums will be affected is to ring and ask about a particular person/car/mods etc. It will more than likely make some difference to the premiums but it's the 'how long is a piece of string' thing again. Each case is viewed differently. Pick up the phone is my advice.

As minislapper said - you must declare anything that is not standard to that vehicle.
That includes changing the colour, seats, big ICE installs, tinted glass, power mods, big exhausts.....everything.
Different companies may or maynot give a damn about them, but come the time you have a big accident and people are badly hurt I can assure you that the Police will seize the vehicle and go over it for any defects or changes which could have affected it.
Ie: fitting a bike engine to a mini and not upgrading the brakes - more power than it can handle.
That report would be sent to the insurance companies for all parties and thats when they will shaft you.
I have had experience of this from both sides - current job and previous where I worked for a brokers - who sadly attracted alot of chavvy types with the badly modded motors.
