Well my engine that i boguht the other day was starting but only while spraying pure eth(start ya b****rd) into the carby..
But it wouldnt continue running so i think since the car had supposedly sat tehre for around a year or 2 the fuel pump may have died out some how.. so i was thinking it was the fuel pump
But after a while i smelt some smoke and then saw some...

Which turned out to be this...

So after this fried wheneever i tried to start the engine i get a whirl form which seems to be the distributor and sounds like a vacuum cleaner starting up... So i could only assume it was the ignition coil was obviously Fu*KT so i had a spare and tried to replace it wtih this...

Yet there is no change with that one in and out..
What do u think could cause this.. And do u think the fuel pump must be gone 2??
And would this new ignition coil potentially work even if its around 2 times the size as the intiial one??
Thanks

Ok, first off - the coil has proly overheated because you've left the ignition ON for a long time with out the engine running. The ignition coil is normally only switched on for a short period of time during the 4 stroke cycle, and this is controled by the points in the dizzy.

2nd - I have NO IDEA what the coil(?) is, though it looks vaugly like a coil for a modern injection engine (dunno what kind) but then again, it does look like a HT Fly-back transformer from a TV!
Either way, that coil was not the correct type, and I'm not too sure about the "replacment" coil either.

It also depends on what has been done to the ignition system, has the dizzy been changed / modified in any way or converted to electronic ignition?

As soon as you see the previous owner has added something non standard (like that coil) in the engine bay, it's proly a safe bet that the rest of the engine may have been bodged / modified in some way. Your proly better off going over the entire fueling and ignition parts of the engine and testing / replacing as you go. Chances are there is some other bodged in part that is causing the engine to not fire up.
You said it would fire up when you squirted Ether into the air intake, that would indicate that the problem is with the fueling, so you need to check the fule line is not blocked, also remove the float bowl of the carb and check the bowl is clean (no gunk or debris) and that the float needle is not stuck. I would actually consider striping the carb and cleaning the whole thing, it's prob got some dirt in there and is gummed up (proly still had petrol in the float bowl while being stored, which has left a gummy residue).

starting problems with mini's can be a umber of things

do you have a spark at the plugs?

is the timing of the distributar ok?

what have you changed?

i could go on and on. the first thing i allways check is to see if i have a spark, and i use a spark tester which i picked up ages ago, you can buy them at any motor factor or hellfrauds(though im liking them more now i have a trade card with them). they, clip between your spark plug and lead and you see a spark then from there i check the timing, if i dont have a spark i check fuel into the carb. also check the leads are on the correct cylinders.

as for those coils as syicon says i dont know what the fisrt coil is off or the 2nd.

what year is the car and is it carb or injection? do you have points or an electronic distributar?

Hey guys it was just the starter motor had seized up so i cleaned it up with some de-greaser and wd40.
The engine now kicks over and tries to start but i think the ignition coil is the problem because

It's obviously a fuel problem - check to see if any petrol is getting up to the carb by taking the hose off and turning the engine over - briefly!! Other check - pour some petrol down the carb (just an egg cup) and crank it up - if it starts and runs for a few seconds then the ign is ok but no fuel is getting through.

Yeah they probably is a fuel problem.. But there is a problem also with the ignition coil cause i checked the wiring last night after i replaced it witha new one and the engine was turning over but there is no power goign to it so i think when the old one burnt out. So i think it must of killed the power line somewhere down the line where it was weaker... So i need to re wire the ignition coil ... Does anyone have any suggestions or any diagrams on how to rewire a ignition coil??
Thanks for the help guys..:proud:
