Ok heres the deal,

Its a full bare metal paint job for my mini, I have already stripped the whole thing and am going to take it on a trailer to the shop, he is spraying the whole shell outside and the inside of the pillars, dash, boot and engine bay. Welding needs doing on battery box, small bit on door, and bits underneath rear arches. The paint i asked him for the quote on was that orange focus st paint, heres what he said:

Paint and material (maybe more depending on colour)£800.00
Welding (1 Days work) £150.00
Sand blasting £250.00
Preparation + Spraying 6-7 Days work £1,750.00

Total £2,950.00

I knew it would be expensive but :) what do you paint experts think?

Wow that sounds alot, if it was a special kind of paint effect i wouldnt be that surprised but as its only one colour it sounds very expensive to me.

For that sort of money I would go for a brand new shell, and get it painted for £600~ £700 on top, it will work out more overall but it will a far better deal in the long run

the time is the main factor clearly and i dont think 6-7 days of work is realistic for a mini!
ours was a bare metal respray and averaged 2 days to get the prep done from a heriatage shell base with minor weld from fitting a turbo box and aches cut and dressed for wider rims. all was seam sealed and then 1 day to spray it up ( 3 layers undercoat, 4 layers of top of lexus black which has a metalic fleck in it and a layer of laquer) and that was using an oven. so 3 days is more relaistic time frame from our experience. a mate did ours who worked with my husband in paint shop attached to a garage.
not sure if that helps any but thats what we found and was a proffesional job. costs i couldnt compare as mates rates but the time should be a sitable guide.

No matter how much prep work you do, i have never found a body hop that won't want to prep it further... what i would class as prepped (and i have painted my own cars before) my local bodyshop called Dog Poo... they wanted it bare metaled, de-greased, primed up (several coats all rubbed down in between coats) then 5 colour coats and flattened off and polished to finish (a week or 2 after painting) the other option they gave me was to key the existing paint and have a blow over which they would do for £300 but would give no guarantees as to how long it would last.

Can you find a similar colour for less??

I had a full body respray with colour changing paint and candy lacquer, inside outside underneath all doors done seprately, and had a zeemax kit fitted by a zeemax fitter at the same time for £2100.00 all in including filling, trimming installing mesh work and installing fiat coupe rear lights etc.

that all seems a bit steep for what your having done. :)

To be honest, that seems about right to me, and I do that for a living. It's alot of work, and the hours mount up. No-one realises how long it takes to weld, fill, prime, prep, paint, flat, buff, and polish a car, until they do it themselves. Also that focus ST orange is expensive, as it's a two stage pearl. You may or may not be aware that if you scratch or dent your paintwork after it's painted in that colour, it is virtually impossible to colour match it. That is why ford no longer are producing cars in it, because insurance companies are refusing to pay out, as a scratch can turn into a full respray. There are lots of similiar oranges in single stage pearls/metallics, that will save you alot of hassle later on.

Hope this helps!

Pete.

i used to have a clubby in ford phoenix vista orange, which was a 70's escort colour (non metallic), perhaps that with a flake could give a similar finish? :P

my respray was 2k and i thought that was expensive... :)
