Hi,

I bought my mini in November last year. The previous owner was honest enough to tell me that there was a problem with the speedo and that he had bought a new cable but hadn't got arpund to fitting it. I fitted it and it still didn't work. I have checked that the clock works....whoich it does. I therefore think that I either have the wrong cable, it is not connecting properly at the gearbox end or the gear has gone in the gearbox.

What I need to know is the differences io nthe cables that you can buy. Both ends fit ok, or seem to so is there anything else or could it be the inner cable is the wrong shape and I need a different cable?

I don't want to pay for it to be fixed if it is something simple!!

It is a 1980 Mini 998 but now has a Morspeed 1275 engine, if that helps.

Thanks

Take the cable out from the back of the speedo, get the front wheels up on axle stands, then turn on the engine and put it in gear, you'll soon see if the cable is spinning or not.

it could be a metro speedo drive, the mini cable is too big to fit into it.

Worst fears........ I have tightened it fuly and it still does't work. I checked the dash end and it doesn't turn.

Can someone tell me my next steps......unless someone can shed light on this metro cable thing then it looks like I'm gonna have to get a garage to look at it and I guess replace the speedo gear.

But the miles that your car shows won't be changing and therefore it is illegal. I'm gonna call a garage and see what they think it'll cost to fix

its not illegal for the mileage not to turn, the illegal part is trying to pass it off as having done less mileage when you sell it. As long as you;re honest with the buyer and they know the score then there's nowt wrong.

are you certain that it is correctly seated in the gearbox end? the old cable might have sheared off, from underneath you can remove the adaptor plate which the cable screws onto and remove the little drive wheel from the gearbox, then put the adaptor plate back on with the cable properly seated.

sounds like its the drive that comes of the main shaft in the gear box that may have sheared of if it is that is bad news as it is an engine out gear box of and in lots of bits to fix job

Can you get the plate that it bolts to off with the engine stll in the car??

Maybe I'll just buy a digital speedo for a mountain bike and use that for now...... any thoughts on that?
