I was thinking while at work today, why would you want handles on the outside of your car when you could get pop doors ( Press a button on a key fob and the doors pop unlocked)

My Question is has anyone done this?? is it posible on a mini? What would i need?

And could i do a pop boot with hydralic arms to lower it slowly?

Cheers.

I remember reading that by law you have to have door handles.... or something on the outside that allows the door to be pulled outwards.

Either way, check on the legal side before you start hacking and welding....

Mr Benn

ps I want shaved doors as well..... just not at the point of doing it yet....

Basically, yes it's been done and no you don't need handles! You do however have to have an override fitted to the car somewhere discreate so that in the event of an accident the can be popped from outside!

Plus you also need to make sure you have a way of opening the door in case the battery goes flat!

Moved to Styling.

I personally think that if you have no handles and a 'discrete' over ride, how do the emergency services get you out in the event of an accident?

Vital seconds could be lost whilst looking for a method to get you out!

Smash the glass and open from inside? I see where your coming from Matt, I wouldn't like knowing that it would be more difficult to open the doors in an emergency.

I wouldn't have thought it would be too hard to integrate a central door locking mechanism some how?

I've already got central door locking on mine.......

You don't need to be able to get in if the battery's flat tho - what are you going to do? So long as you can get in the boot you're fine.

Theres a few reasons I can think of why you'd want access to the car if the battery is flat, but its because of the reasons that I can't think of that would make me build in a bypass.

I have central locking, its great, as for shaving the doors, not really my style.
Besides, the central locking kit works wonders!

You wouldnt need to look the doors as its got no handles, so no one can get in any way.

And you can get poping doors fitted to any car and the poping kits are all over ebay for £40 - £90

as someone said, you don't need to lock the doors if there are no handles as thieves can't get in anyway. in the event of a crash, (if its serious enough for all occupants to be unconcious, windows will normally be smashed anyway and you cant open the doors due to them being wedged shut. Due to the rubber seal of the front window, in a sever impact these will usually pop out where as moder bonded windscreens will stay put and need to be cut out.

Fire service college teach casualty centred rescues which involve manual stabilisation of the vehicle to enable a first aider to gain entry (by which ever means are quickest.. window, open door etc) then more substantial stablilsation using chocks, ladders and lines where applicable, then glass management (break it and get oit out of the way in a controlled fashion) then make space around the casualty.. this can be by opening a door or cutting the roof off etc.

If you can open a door from the outside, its usually a sign that the impact was not too severe.

If i was doing this conversion, and i am considering it (boot too) i will be putting a forkift style charging port under the rear valance to enable a second battery/charger to be placed on the car without opening any doors (the electrics will then be energised.

Most modern cars now have electronic handles insread of mechanical ones so if the battery is flat, you are screwed and need to consult a franchised dealer who will charge an extortionate rate to get you back in the car.
