My engine has recently developed a loud ticking noise down the radiator side; sounds a bit like a diesel on tickover!

Its definitely not the fan or any of the ancillaries as I ran it earlier with the fan belt disconnected and the noise was still there.

Its got a very slight oil leak and my oil level was middling between Min and Max when I checked it on Sunday so I topped it up, but this didn't make any difference either, so I've narrowed it down now to being either a knackered oil pump or something going on with my timing chain as its definitely coming from down that side of the engine and theres nothing else there that it could be really that I know of.

Any ideas or is it new engine time?

Its an '84 A+ 998 with at approx 70k on the clock (the speedo drive is knackered too so I don't know for definite!)

Cheers! :D

Could be water pump bearings which are shot. Or tappets. Try putting a few drops of oil into the hole in the water pump and see if the noise stops.

Alternatively, get a long handled screwdriver, place the metal end onto the water pump and VERY CAREFULLY put the plastic handle to your ear (being careful not to get anything caught in any moving parts) and see if the noise is coming from there. Also do the same thing around other parts of the engine. HOpefully you'll be able to track down where it's coming from.

is it a constant noise throughout rev range? or just at tick over? if its constantly ticking check tappets. had it happen to me but i discovered it to be a crack cam lobe. stupid minisport 1.7 rockers.

Yes mate constant throughout, increases with the revs, and always happens, not just every now and then.

I'm 99.9% certain its not tappets, the noise is obviously coming from the rear right hand side of the engine when listening over it down by the timing chain cover etc.

Minislapper- as above I've had all the ancillaries off one at a time and checked them, built it back up, tried again and still got the noise, and today I took off the fan belt and ran the engine meaning none of the ancillaries were functioning and the noise was still there, meaning its definitely something to do with the engine itself.

Its also been recommended to me on another site to check for a blow at the exhaust manifold so I'll get a new gasket and see how it goes.

Really appreciating everyones help!

im guessing the timing chain tensioner has failed more than likely need to replace both the chain and the tensioner! not an easy job but that sounds about right for me, the chain will be rattling about in the timing cover!
