alright,
just in the thought process at the moment. but: im planning on building up a 998 engine with a 12g295 head 1.5.1 rockers , HIF 38 carb and few other little upgrades. but will a piper 285 cam be too lumpy? or will it be ok for this set up?
thanks
piper 285 cam

Right.
1) 1.5.1 Are too much for a 998
2) 285 is a damn sight too lump. A Sw5 from swiftune, a 266 from kent or a 276 from Kent cams would work better.
3) If you want a good idle then a lightened flywheel will help.

a 285 won't be too lumpy, a lightened flywheel *may make the idle more lumpy though. get a decent ignition system fitted and it should be fine, depends on what you want from the car to be honest, daily drive or weekend warrior.
not sure on the 1.5's, i'd say they'd be too much on a 285 but should be ok with a milder cam maybe?
*my car idles fine at 900rpm with an ultralight fly, but i have heard of other people having problems with lightened flywheels and a rough idle.

a 285 cam will be fine, i got a 286 and its great. To make the most out of it tho u'll need to have everything balanced, so u can make use of the revs that can be achieved with the cam. Otherwise you'll end up with an engine where the cam wont make any power till 3500-4000rpm, and it'll top out at 6000-6500. Get it lightend and balanced and u'll be looking at another 500-1000rpm. also, get a cam kit, because u'll need the uprated springs to avoid valve bounce, and avoid 1.5 rockers, if you want more lift, get a better cam

Really......bugger I was told it would be a bit lumpy on the idle. Oh well, disregard my comment then.

oh yea, its lumpy on idle, and your reliability goes down the pan.... but its still just about driveable if you like to thrash ur engine...and its a hoot
