I have an oil leak that i have tried to fix twice... but just checked this morning and its still coming out pretty fast.
it looks like its coming from the timing cover, but i have replaced both of the gaskets on it twice now with no luck, the second time i even used a gasket sealent too.

anyone got an idea of where it might be coming from now?, my guess is the timing plate thing ( not sure what its called ) that goes between the block and timing cover, but then if it is... is it possible to remove the timing gears without messing up the timing?

Yeah, It's possible! I have just done this myself for the first time. I'm not sure if you have a Haynes manual but it's all in there. Basically set the engine to TDC and there are dots on the cog coming off the cam and crank. As long as they are set next to each other when replacing the sprockets you sould be fine. Plus, you won't need to turn the engine/cam for this job so you can just slide everything back as it was (As long as nothing is disturbed).

just hope its leaking from there!

See the furthest timing cover bolt to the right in the picture...looks like its fouling against the gearbox casing. If this is the case then as you tighten it up it will deflect the timing gear base plate away from the half moon seal and cause it to leak !

Stick some washers on the bolt and make sure it doesn't touch the gearbox and see if this solves your problem !!!

Ok here’s the correct procedure for replacing the seal… remove the pulley and timing cover,
Replace the seal and gasket, now the important bit! Replace the cover but only replace one or two of the cover screws but leave them loose! DO NOT TIGHTEN YET replace the pulley … now tighten up the screws. Most problems I have seen here are caused by the cover being installed and all the bolts and screw tightened up before the pulley is put back on! The pulley needs to be centralised on the seals and if the screws are tightened before this is done is can leave a small gap which is where the oil comes out.
Hope this helps mate… the only other cause can be if a duplex gear set has been installed and the cover has not been modified!

yeh the bolt was against the gear box the first time i tried but then i replaced it all and put extra washers in to stop it from touching.. but still leaking

I will have a go at doing it Matrix's way.. see if that works
