Hi there

I have purchased my first ever mini (1984 mayfair). It has a metro 1293 engine with stage 1 kit. My intention is to build myself a little pocket rocket with around 100bhp. Firstly is the metro engine (am i correct in saying a+) a good choice to modify as most of the modded engines i see are the a series original engines. And secondly i want a reasonably fast mini but with reliability (am i asking for too much). So the question is: What is the most sensible way of going around this as there is so much to choose from. Please bare in mind i know nothing about these cars at all however have a reasonably good knowledge of most cars.

thanks Neil

Want advce then leave it alone, when you go down the path of moddifying it gets addictive and starts to get expencive but read the bible first

Its not just about the head, u need a cam and a good set of rockers (1.5 rollers)... mine was is a 1293 with stage 3 head 1.5 roller tip rockers and a 286 kent cam.. good for 86bhp at the wheels, about 100 at the fly... it had more to give but was my everyday car, still sweet.

if u want more then say good-bye to reliability.

The gearboxes are good, just the drop gears need upgrading to s/c

Also recommend a cross pin diff as a must for any build over 100bhp

As for your engine people might be able to help if u gave us a engine number... but i'd say it was a A+ from a metro.

Has it got letters cast into the block below the head on the left hand side?

to be honest, pre A+ 1275s are pretty scarce, so it's almost gauranteed that you've got an A+

Saying that, theres only minor difference between them, and almost all the parts are interchangeable

dont worry at all about the gearbox or drop gears - they'll be perfect for a road-going car, plus SC gearsets are bloody expensive, spend the money on a 4-pin diff, as it's only about £150 for a decent one

I'm told the car was used for hill climb and the fuel and break pipes run through the car. The car moves pretty well however it's pretty much screming at 70. I assume it may have a 850 diff. Would that make sense? I've seen a head on ebay but cant be sure if it will fit my engine, could anyone help http://cgi.ebay.co.u...e...A:IT&ih=012
And does this sound a good buy. Also seen a 12G940 cylinder head will this fit?

thanks again

12g940 is a standard 1275 head.

Does this fit both the a and a+ engines then. Does this mean if it's from an a series it's a leaded head ?

The 12G940 will fit all A seres and A+ engines though you may have to pocket the 998 and 850 and no just because it's A+ does not meen it's unleaded. not sure what year the stated makeing unleaded heads but you would need to get one from that year onwards or do what I did and get one moddified to go unleaded.
