I've got an 85 mayfair with the stock 998 . After much fiddling with the carb(HS SU4), I can't get the car to drive right. It has no bottom end power . Once it's going, it's so-so. I read the instructions but can't find the piston lifting pin on the carb. Does anyone have simple instructions on setting one up from zero?

not all hs4 carbs have the piston lifting pin you are after.
what does the car drive like with the choke out, and have you checked the level in the dash pot.
if the dash pot level is too low, the piston will rise too fast and you while get a lack of power servearlly. or judder
what i do is to wind the jet out and get a colourtune kit. that with a emissions tester you should be able to get it running better

It doesn't have one?... no wonder it took me so long and still I can't find it!.. Theres dashpot oil.. but it's 10W30 I poured in there; could that be the culprit? I'll try the choke thing when I get home tonight. Whats a colortune kit? Emission tester? (theres a home-use one?)

Halfrauds...
Colourtune is a spark plug with a viewing window so you can see the colour of the combustion and hence try and sort out how rich/weak the mixture is. I have one but can't seem to get on with it
You can buy a gas emissions tester from halfrauds also, but it is £75.... up to you but if you are going to do alot of retuning of your car it is handy. If not then use it once then take it back for a full refund!
It is also handy to have prior MOT time to knock your emissions way down.
As for setting carbs up from scratch your better off doing a seaarch as it is bound to be on here somewhere
Hope this helps
