Hey all, my mini has started making alarming banging noises. It makes quite deep knocking noises which seem to be coming from the bottom end somewhere. You can slightly feel it vibrating through the floor near the gear linkage tunnel. I don't think its an ancillary part like the water pump or alternator, its definitely coming from the engine. It started doing it a few weeks back when I was moving the mini in and out of the garage, and then it suddenly stopped. It started again on the way home from work today and has got alot worse this evening. It only does it when you're in gear and moving and its' speed doesn't seem to correspond with the engine speed. It stops when you excellerate, and coast very slowly. Performance of the engine isn't affected. I slowed down in second gear to listen to it and second gear popped out with a loud clunk. This has never happened before, although it is often difficult to engage third, (reverse gear bush worn).

It's an MG 1275, which was only fitted last month Please help, it's doing my head in.

PLEASE don't let it be the bearings...

sounds like its the engine steady to me, the engine will pitch forward when you're off the gas and the exhaust will knock/vibrate against the tunnel/bulkhead. grab hold of the rocker cover and try to rock the engine back and forth, any play and it needs new bushes.

I have a similar noise, turns out my exhaust got bent on something and is knocking on the tunnel when lifting off

Hmm cheers guys, I dont think so, just fitted all new engine steady bushes, so all are tightened and as they should be, plus i've got a new ultimate engine steady. The engine is very er... steady. And it's not the exhaust either! totally the wrong kind of noise! I'm quite good at detecting mini noises. this one is confusing me though.

aah furry muff, thats the most common my engines making a banging noise fault


i had one a few weeks ago which i was convinced was a knackered inner CV or my downpipe rubbing on the pot joint, really bad rumbling knocking noise. turned out to be a duff wheel bearing but didn't sound like it at all. might be worth a check?

the jumping out of 2nd could just be the syncro's on the way out as usual.

My 998 had a similar issue last year. After getting off the highway it was shaking excessively and sounds like something is beating on the bottom of the floor pan when I accelerate. It turned out to be a cracked valve! Do a compression test and see if you lost a cylinder.

I have narrowed the problem down to the driveshaft. Not sure how though, or what... yet.

I would say steering rack.

And check your rod change housing for wear.

Okay, now this is really embarrasing. The wheel nuts were loose. I didn't think of checking them as I always double check them after working on it. My boss reckons someone tried to nick the wheels. I feel very very stupid now.

if you drove with loose wheel nuts check the wheel for damage as it maybe scrap due to damage on wheel nut faces
