basically there's no difference between a 998 and 1275 gbox... the differences are to do with the age of the vehicle.
If we just deal with Rod Change boxes, there are two basic sorts PreA+ and A+
A+ gearboxes are normally identified by a large diameter bearing for the idler and a grove down the middle of the gears, they also have a slightly different pitch angle of the gear, which is all to make the box quieter.
Pretty much all A+ boxes have the same ratios, with the only difference being the final drives (diff), which is age and source dependant..
A series boxes have a smaller idler bearing and no grove... and also have slightly different ratios to the a+
You also can get Close ratio boxes ( fitted to old cooper's and gt's )
Also look at thread....

You need a gearbox which has the same size idler bearing as the one pressed into your crankcase cover...
Large idler shaft diameter = .875"
Small idler shaft diameter = .750"

They wont gear, generall means you were attempting to combine different pitch gears, I suspect the 1275 was a metro with an A+ Primary, and idler, and the gearbox was an Pre A+.
You cannot mix and match between A series and A+, unless you have the complete drop gears from one and the gearbox from another.

dunno what it is its off a 998 1992 model and the little 998 block is warped so head gasket keeps going so i was gonna put a recon 1275 in it
but the gearbox on the 998 is good

With that age, if you drop a 1275 from a metro, there will be no fitting problems at all...
If you do got that route, you'll obviously want a 1275 head aswell, so you'll also need a top radiator hose and bracket for a 1275 ( the angle is different to a 998 )

take the complete flywheel/clutch from your 998 and stick on to the 1275, job done....
As for a recon engine for 450 ??? hmmm... You can get a morspeed 1293 kit for 350 notes... gives you 100 notes to find a head on ebay !!!
