Hi all. Here's some details on my mini from New Zealand. I also use oldschool.co.nz so this info has been copied across. Looking forward to using this forum more as my mini gets better and better.

Here is the link to the discussion thread:

1971 Morris Mini 1000
4speed manual
Vilencia blue
Tan interior

purchased in 2003 for my sister, I wasn't a fan of minis then. Here's how it looked when we bought it:

We then went down to Repco the next day and bought:
white and primer spray paint
masking tape
clear coat
number plate surround
exhaust tip
8ball gearknob
Fluffy Dice!!
- basically a whole lot of cheap nasty stuff and here's what happened:

And with a bit more white paint attacked the grill and wheels:

In the meantime I became attached to the damn thing. I'd been using it to get to uni. It was cheap to run and was great for finding small carparks outside uni on the street that only a mini could fit. Saved me buying a parking permit.

Within a month someone had left a note on it offering to buy it for almost double what we paid. Me being me i decided to keep it as minis had started to go up in value around this time. It was also paying for itself in the savings I made in petrol and insurance.

at the end of 2004 I attacked it with the paint stripper. This time I did everything properly. Here are some shots:

My mini 1000 is now a mini 1312. Goes real nice.

Basically i bought this:

The owner claimed it was a 1300 but had no way of proving it. So with the help of the guys from oldschool.co.nz we sussed out the engine size, yip 1300 :w00t: here are the photos and notes.

http://www.oldschool...c...300&start=0

Quick ways to tell if the engine you've got is 1300:

Theres a tag on the top of the block near the fan, should say 12xxxxxx for 1275
99xxxxx is 998 and 10xxxxxx is 1098

Yeah mate. Morris 1300. The engine fitted sweet as. Luckily both cars had the same inner coupling with a nylon cross. The remote shifter is slighty different between the two - one bolts upwards to the engine, the other bolts in from the side. That means the rearmost mount is different. So currently running without rear mount at tail end of remote shifter. Basically now i need a mount with of 35mm thickness, with an imperial stud each end.

from minispares - Austin 1300s/AAs and 1300GTs used a remote-type gearbox. The main difference is the horrendous rubber/metal sandwich plate between the remote housing and the back of the diff housing. Made for quite a gooey gear-change once a few miles old. These will fit in place of the Mini remote type, although the rear mount is different. My advice here is to change it to the Mini mounting by drilling/tapping the two holes necessary to carry the Mini remote mounting. Trying to alter the bracket to take the Austin 1300 one is more of a job! Getting a remote-housing type gearbox into a rod-change shell a worse one, taking a fair bit of fabricating and fettling. Internally they use the same gears as the old Mini - square-tipped teeth with the same ratios - except the 1300GT. This used the S/1275GT close-ratio set-up employing the 18-tooth first motion shaft and 22G1040 laygear. FDs-wise, you could get anything from a 3.76 to a 4.1. Best to double-check by the tooth-counting method!

Useful - will try that then, drilling and tapping the remote shifter instead.

Why not just put the gearbox off your 1000 on the 1300, as it says, not like they are any different ???

As for the Rad, the best one to use on a 1300 is a twin core, the 4 cores have a tendancy to run hot.

Good point regarding the gbox swap. In this case though the gearbox on the 1300 has a much better gear change. It had just been rebuilt when the morris 1300 was taken off the road.

The radiator - locally someone is selling 3core units, suitable for upto 1275. Can you please explain the diference between 2core, 3 core etc. for example - Does the core come 10 or so mm thick but they layer it to get 30 or wateva. Or do they break radiator cavity up into 3 different regions or something.

Not sure you can put 1275's on top of pre rod change gearboxes from 998 without grinding extra crank clearance - I'd check before you get the spanners out.
might be able to swap the diff though.

What was wrong with the 1300 it looked like a tidy car?

I was under the impression you should never swap diff casings, as they are machined/matched to the gearbox casing and changing them over can resulet in major leakage!

Nice looking motor there tho! I would personally go for some more period mirrors to finnish the look off....

cheers for replies.

the 1300 already had the engine removed from it when i bought it. It was a cheap purchase $200 which i did basically to get the engine. I would have preferred to have bought a running 1300 but decided it was worth the risk to buy it as it was. 1300 came with heaps of spares too. Already sold some parts. Will likely give away the remaining car.

mirrors - i likem as they give a sportspac look. However i would be keen on something nice and chrome but i was able to get these mirrors cheap on staff price. $2.50 each. Then i painted them white

Remote Mount
Well the minis remote had one kind of rubber mount, the landcrabs mount was different. To fit a mini rubber mount i basically drilled and tapped the mounting locations into the rear of the remote shifter.

Update 2012:
I cooked the engine as I didn't get the new radiator in in time. Since then it smoked massively on start-up I also managed to rip a hole in the floor while using the handbrake. Last post was June 2007. Now Nov 2012 I guess it is time to get the little thing going again. I've got a case of mini fever
