Ok well the situation is this.
i put my new engine in and the new mk 3 loom and everything was going swell as we just replaced like for like. i didn't take any of the fusebox clips off when i took it out of the old shell so that was just screwing back in place.
now what happens is a bit confusing basically i have wired up the solenoid as per peoples that i looked at when down in bringhton which is starter cable on inside (wing) everything else engine side and the clips on the relevant spades.
now if i connect the battery my dash lights come on with no key which is odd. if i turn the key the solenoid clicks but does nothing. so i take the battery out and try jumping the starter off off the battery using cables and nothing still (not even a spark, yet the clips spark when touched together), which is odd as when i take the starter out it spins like a starter should.
so what could be causing the lights coming on pre ignition in key? and why is it not turning? i haven't really done that much appart from replace like for like on the loom?
things i have done
1, new battery (uprated)
2, new solenoid
3, tested started out of the car
4, have a good earth (from flywheel casing to inner wing)
has anyone got some ideas as to why i am getting these difficulties?
thanks in advance
chris

When you try jumping the engine off a battery how are you connecting the negative lead up?

on the earth lead/starter casing like i did when i tested it on the floor. When you try jumping the engine off a battery how are you connecting the negative lead up?
i was chatting to some people last night and they think the starter has gone (something to do with the internals) and although it has enough power to spin it out of the car a new engine is just to much for it and its only downhill from there.
the lights thing on the dash is confusing me now any ideas?
