my sister in laws 1992 998 mini city is not very well at the minute. it was running fine and then kept stuttering at high revs so the dash pot was checked and needed topping up, it ran ok for a bit then started doing it again so checked the dashpot and it needed filling again. ran ok for a while then started stuttering again and then completely cut out. dizzy cap points and arm were changed and this fixed the problem for a while. then it did it again so she took it to a garage where they changed the points again because apparently the wrong ones were on it, changed the coil and it ran ok till she got into the middle of town where it cut out again, the garage came and picked it up again and the guy put a new carb on, ran fine for about a mile and now has cut out again. havent got a clue and the guy at the garage says he is at a bit of a loss so i thought id ask you lot for a bit of help
thanks in advance

Was this a mini-specialist garage? It does sound like the first carb could have done with a re-build if it was loosing all its oil quickly, which the new carb should obviously have cured. Im leaning towards it simpy needing the carb set-up correctly by someone that knows what they are doing.

Does it always cut out when slowing down/stopping?

Have any parts been replaced such as exhaust/inlet etc etc?

OR....there is a fuel delivery problem....which can be checked by taking the hose from the fuel pump off and turning the engine over.

it wasnt a mini specialist garage but the guy owns minis and he only charged for the points and the coil so hes alright. it cuts out under load, everything on it is standard. one thing i thought is that it had been stood for about six months so is there a possibility that the fuel tank could have started to rust and bring C**p through?

Clean the float bowl out. My El Gordo did a similar thing in that at high speed she would splutter and die if I was unlucky.

It ended up being a load of C**p blocking the needle valve.

edit

After 6months fuel tends to go off a bit, just to let you know.

You haven't mentioned changing the condenser. I have had problems with these recently. The engine will run but any load and it dies. As it breaks down it will allow spark to be produced but only a weak one hence the problems under load. Only a couple of pound if it doesn't work
