I put my engine in yesterday - another first - today i was wanting to put the driveshafts into the pot joints - they already have the half with the ball bearings on the shaft. The near side one went in a doddle, but the off side one doesn't seem to fit at all. Help is much appreciated as I need the car soon.

There are different size pot joints and joints. Are they the same ones that came off the car previously ?

possibly not. they came with the shell, but the engine didnt and already had pot joints on it. I'm guessing i should try changing the pot joint to one that will fit

i had this problem when i fitted my engine a few months back. One of the housings i was trying to use was too small for the standard joint so i had to change it for the more common type. It was quite easy to see it was a different type as the housing was a lot more square than the usual type id seen.
Someone in my local club mentioned it was a metro one and they where different to mini joints but i dont know how true that was.

You should never fit half of one pot joint to half of another as they are matched sets, especially after they have been in use. A joint consists of it's own outer and inner members. If you have got them mixed up and aren't sure what is what it's best to get 2 new or re-con joints. That's why you shouldn't remove the joint from the engine by cutting the gaiter and splitting it, they normally seperate from the shaft easily enough.
