Last week I got the car back from the mechanics - and it was running (not well, but that's another issue). Nothing has been done to it since it came back, yet yesterday I went to start it and it does nothing. I can hear the starter solenoid clicking but nothing else happens.
Could any one give me a check list of things to go through?
I haven't done this before but am fairly handy and I don't really want to send it back to the mechanics as it takes him an inordinate amount of time to do anything and I am hoping to get the car on the road before the 11th of June.

Take the starter motor out and put it back in, replaced the starter on mine last week fired up fine the first day but then tried the next and only heard the solenoid clicking. Took it out put it back in and this seemed to solve the problem, don't know why but think the starter was getting jammed on something or I'd tightened the bolts too much. If the starters not been messed with in ages then I might be totally off, have you tried tapping the solenoid?

Make sure the batts charged, it could just be lacking power, then try tapping the side of the starter opposite the fly wheel it may just be sticking

Turn the key and tap the starter (you can just do it on your own with a spanner and an open window) if it kicks to life then it's a stick starter.
Oh wait, what starter do you have?

sounds like it could just be the battery not having enough charge, or the electrical terminals on the starter motor/solinoid are loose.
there was a terminal on mine that came loose it was the feed from the altinator so i pinched it back tight with a pair of pliers and it was fine.
also could be that your soliniod is just nakered.
