Hey there. I assumed i had a blown head gasket about 2 months ago, so i changed it. I ordered the kit for the 998 engine. But when i was putting every thing together some passerby said that my engine is 1275.. because its red. Im low on oil again and my water has gone a thickish and white, but only since i put in some radflush. Just wondering if its possible to fit a 998 gasket to a 1275 by mistake? Or are the holes and stuff in completely different bits?

easiest way to determine if it is a 1275 is to look at the engine number. if it starts with a 12 then its a 1275, if it starts with a 9 its a 998.

Unable to help with the gasket problem but i thought the oil and water gallery locations where the same as you can fit 1275 heads on 998's.

head might be warped or the bore ring on the 998 gasket if you have a 1275 might be over lapped into the bore causing it to not seal properly.

A warped head causes overheating doesnt it? Recently its been in the red after running 5 minutes..

Just because your engine is red doesnt mean its a 1275. Lots have been painted red.....

If you do a search theres afew ways to tell the difference between 998 and 1275 blocks.

Do you drive long or short journeys?

a warped head causes the gasket to fail and the fluids to mix. A red engine does not automatically denote that it is a 1275, and i think that a 998 gasket on a 1275 would overlap the cylinders and you would realise something was amiss. An engineers will tell you if the head surface is straight or not.

Short journeys will cause condensation in the rocker cover, causing white oily mess. If you drive short runs, then every so often you should take it for a good run and let it get upto temperature.

Did you drop the oil and replace when doing the head? Id normally drop the oil, fit a new filter and new oil for 100miles and drop it again to make sure. If you didnt drop the oil, the water which did mix will be present.

When you did the head, did you re-torque after the engine had got warm? And i normally check again after 50 or so miles.

Id consider dropping the water/coolant mix out. and replacing with a 60water/40 coolant mix (with no rad flush etc).

Id be checking that the cooling system is working correctly and there is no leaks.

Other then that, its a compression test and taking the head off for inspection.
