Same question, i can get hold of a g reg mg metro and would like to use the engine. How much work is it to swap them and is it worth doing? Im on a standard 998 atm and id like a bigger engine before i go to stage one.
Thanks in advance.

You need different engine mounts for a start, but everything should fit and work.
I imagine you can drill and tap the head for the Mini heater take off, or just connect up the hoses as per later Mini models.

You shouldnt need different engine mounts, you just have to remove the mounts from the rad side on both engines and pop the Mini one on the metro engine - just watch the top screw on the mini mount as it can be a PITA.
You will also need to swap the bell housings for the clutch over as the Mini one has an engine mount on it - metro one does not. You should be able to swap the clutch from the mini onto the metro engine too.
You might need to swap the thermostat housings over - that is easy enough, I seem to remember you might need a different top rad mount (I already had a front mounted rad so dont quote me on that - I could be wrong)
If you want the heater to work you will need to drill a hole in the head for the heater tap.
We managed to remove both engines in a day (metro engine was in the metro still) and get it in the mini on the 2nd day..

Direct swap, use as much of the metro as you can - where you can't use the minibits.
Only issues...
Heater take off - drill and tap to suit (1/4 unf)
Engine stabiliser bolt holes in block - may need a tap running through them
Bypass hose - use mini thermostat housing and drill a few 1/4 inch holes in the thermostat.
Clutch - All verto or all non-verto and starter motor to match (I'd go none verto)
Chances are your speedo will be out - if you're on 12 inch wheels you may be able to put it right by swapping speedo drive on gearbox.

1275 rad mount was different because engine is a bit taller than 998 - as long as the fan isn't going to go through your radiator...

obviously use metro manifold, carb, ignition.

the manifolds should be the same as a mini's

they'll fit won't flow as well which'll effect carb 'n ignition setup
MG metro inlet and an after market lcb is about ideal

Just swop over bits from the old engine as you go......
