Everyone seems to just accept that 1" is 25.4mm now. When I was at school that wasn't accurate enough! Even engineers seem to quote this now, maybe that's why nothing is made as well as it used to be......

It all depends on what inch you are basing it on I suppose. There's about 6 different inch measurements.
