Hi there,

Right, ive just removed my drain plug from the sump and drained all the old oil out of my 1275cc auto.

After removing the sump plug i found 4 pins (roughly 10mm long and 1 mm in diameter) stuck to my sump plug magnet.

Closer inspection ive found that they havent sheared off anywhere (as they are all the same length and no rough ends/burrs). Does anyone know where these may have come from? Its got me worried now, especially after my last post regarding my car making wierd noises during kick downs!

Also...sorry to keep asking... but whats the best oil to put back in. I know ive got to put loads in, but what 10/40?, 20/50...etc???? - dont want to refill it and it not work as well

Thanks

Furry looking bit on the plug is any metal shards that have come from the engine.

The plug is magnetic, to stop these floating round the engine. Wipe clean before refitting.

Oil depends what you like, i personally run 10/40 or 20/50 depending whats in stock when i need it.

Sounds more like a needle roller bearing has fallen apart.
Think you night have bigger issues than what oil to use I'm afraid!

i dont think you got what i was trying to say...

One the magnet pin on the sump plug i found 4 small pins that have been floating around in my engine. The magnet on the sump plug obviously attracted them. My sump plug had a few small bits of metal on the magnet and 4 metal pins (which im thinking might be out of my gearbox!)

Cool for the oil

I think we got it. I know GraemeC got it. You've got some serious problems and shouldn't let this go... or you won't go.

needle roller bearing???

What areas of the car are these on? What would this involve to rectify the problem? - As in would the engine coming out be on the cards???? Could i get away with driving it or is this risking fcuking up the engine?

try a pm to guessworks he seems to know his stuff on boxes.
it will be from your gear box and the engine and box would have to be split to fix it so the engine most defernatley will need to come out.
and driving it like this will destroy your box in the next few miles i would say.

Yes, the engine is going to have to come out.

I don't know the auto box. However, on a manual box there are needle bearings in several places (drop gears, laygear, etc.) It's not worth speculating on where these came from. You just need to get the gearbox services ASAP before serious damage happens to the gears (if it hasn't already happened. )

Their part of the gearbox aren't they? So it's probably an engine out job in that case.

Oh and Classic 20W/50 is the right oil for Minis too.
