Hi, I am a bit of a thicky when it comes to mini engines and gearboxes. Our 1997 1.3 MPI Gearbox bearings are going and rattling and I need to replace. I have searched high and low for a reasonable priced one. Can I fit any gearbox to our existing engine? What are the differences if any? I have been offered a 1000 gearbox will it fit? Please help our beloved is falling apart!!!!!!! Dave

well a decent box and transfer case rebuild is around the 400 mark + fitting.I have searched high and low for a reasonable priced one
the mpi boxes are thrown together from the factory, and have had to do quite a few MPi boxes now, if they are caught before they go bang, then the original box can be sorted well. Some MPis have a slightly different gear ratio to the other boxes. (though this is mixed - rover eh!?)
beware of some cheap boxes, as they are never as comprehensivly rebuilt and made from s/hand bearings, so the life can and usually are shorter..
the 1000 gearbox - if its an A+ unit, will fit with minimal problems, however: the final drive ratio will not be the same as the MPi (a 2.7:1), and the speedo drive gears will also be wrong..
Hope this helps,
Dave

Change the diff if you can to either 2.9, 3.1 or 3.44 for better results

You engines a 97, I think that means you HAVE to have a cat so you'll have to retain it when you swap from injection to a 1275.
........at least I think you do.

Not if the engine is older and is a pre-injection type.
So if it has a carburettor, then no MOT tester should fail it for not being equipped with a catalytic converter.

Isnt it funny how the subject has changed from the gearbox to the engine in two posts, and none of the posts were the originator of the topic
We are still talking about the gearbox!
