Hi, could someone tell me what the difference between the dog gearbox and the normal straight cut rod change 4synchro gearbox? and would the dog box be ok on my 1380 road car, or is it just for race use only? thanks, richard

basicly a dog box doesnt use syncromesh engagment, ether double clutching is required or working out each rev to gently slip into place (doesnt always work how it sounds)

dog box's are used on high power engine's usualy, so should go on the 1380 fine but as would a normal syncro- straight cut box

for road use id go for a syncro with straight cut drops, (huh guess works! lol) All you need for a 1380. Drops to stop side thrust from helical gears cracking the gearbox casing and to make a nice whine  If its for road use you might find it a bit tedious double d clutching all the time, crunching down the road =p But its another toy isnt it =p something nice and novel for a road car. Your choice. Have fun with it!

i think thats just down to how the selector forks are aranged in the box

sequential box's work about a twisting rod which locks into different points engaging gears, obviously lock into a certain order "sequentialy"

Also with bog boxes, the gears are substantially wider and stronger. This is because the space previously used by the synchros is now available... There are a number of dogbox gearkits on the market, generally either 12 tooth dog kits (eg JKD involute set) or 7/6 tooth dog kits (eg Quaife / MED )

Personally I would not bother with a 21 tooth kit as it's almost the same as trying to use a std box with no synchros, where as the 7/6 tooth kits are real clutchless gearchanges...

As for road use.. your choice.

Have you used a Jack Knight involute dog kit GW? I always found mine a joy to use, the only reason i've changed to a swifty box now was to change my gear ratios, otherwise i'd still be running the JKD box.

I wouldent use a dog box for a road car.

Its not nessary as a straight cut gearbox would be perfectly adequate and you wouldnt need a dog box for every day use.

I also think that you would start to find it annoying as you cant drive it like a normal car.

Get the straight cut box, for road use its perfect.

I don't mean to cause an argument here, but do you have experience using a dog box on the road?

I've done 3000 road miles with one and found it no more difficult than driving a synchro box, whilst I agree its complete overkill on most engines, I get annoyed at people spreading mis-information through lack of understanding.

Rant over.

I have had experiance, and I know what you mean, once your used to it then its just like a normal car. But I could just imagine it just becoming annoying ocaistionally like in town.

also there is a huge cost diffrance.

Absolutely, I ran a sunchro box in mine for over a year as I couldn't afford a dog box, I was forever breaking baulk rings and even teeth off the gears so I had to bite the bullet in the end. It was the best move I ever made with my car.

You're right though, they are prohibitively expensive for most.
