Do you have to remove the engine to replace the gearbox? or can it be wiggled and squeezed into position?

May be possible but will be a pain in the arse and pointless when it would be so much easier to take the whole engine out and split it out of the car!

Essentially it's only the gearbox holding the engine into a Mini. It's not like other cars where the engine is bolted into place and the gearbox stuck on the end, it's the other way around. You could take the gearbox out from under it I suppose if you wanted the nightmare experience of removing the transfer gear housing in the engine bay, but then the engine would just be hanging in space on whatever you have used to hold it up. It's far easier to remove them together.
