I assume from the nature of your question that you did not buy the Cooper type air filter housing and are planning on buying discrete filters to attach directly to the carbs. Is this correct?

If so, buy K&N cone type filters. They have a much better reputation than foam type filter elements.

the guy said it came off a 998 cooper, and it needs air filters among other things, so KandN cone type are the way to go?

how much would it be for a pair? also i noticed most twin carb minis have pankake filters, whats the difference?

I think most twin carbs have pancake filters because the owners don't have the Cooper (-S) box and elbows and they think pancakes look cool. I believe Vizard and others say that the actual performance of most pancake filters is poor at best compared to the K&Ns. Most people complain that any air filter without the original box (including the K&Ns) makes more noise.

I have no way of telling you how much K&N cones will cost. (I'm several thousand miles from where you live. ) All I can suggest is calling local sources to see what the going rate is.

Scottyegg, check eBay to see what that box and elbows are worth. Don't just give them away. I can tell you that (at least in the U.S. ) they would go for some serious money.

Those elbows make the air cleaner set up worth a lot more. From what I understand the elbows are even harder to find than the box.

Here's a link to a picture of the exploded carb parts:
http://www.minimotor.../carb-sys.shtml

Here's a link for one place that sells the K&N cones (with pictures)
http://www.ocoop.com...ucts.asp?cat=41

Here's a conversion kit from Burlen:

Scottyegg's link shows the Cooper air filter housing. The elbows are as their name suggests, bends that go from the intake throats of the carbs "up" to the bottom of the air filter housing.

The air filter housing shown in the eBay link is actually later than mine. The early housings have a full, round body (notice on the ebay one that they've clipped the curved end on the "right" side). The sheet metal elbow off the bottom is also different on the later ones, it's about twice as long as those used on the early filter housings. As for where it goes and needing two, no, there's only one (both filter elements are in the single housing so they share this air intake) and I've never seen it connected to anything. It just sucks warm air off the manifold area.
