Ok well 1st time i go out on the road with the car! happerly cruisin down a24 to then find that my gear linkage had come off so i was stuck in 4th!

so pulled overand there i am under cat in pouring rain topless as i had white shirt on! :) i tried geting it out off gear but i had no tools and was just to hard by hand so we then tryed getin it going again in 4th but we just couldnt get the speed up to get going

sooo we then had to be towed home from my mum with me in car holding clutch down

well now ive got it home ive put it back on with a split pine as i didnt have a noraml pin that goes in there tok it for spin down road and it wouldnt come out of 1st! so pulled over got it out and just revesd home

back up in air i chnaged pin same again! it just seems to get stuck in gear! mostly 1st!

could bein towed home in 4th with clutch down done any damage to the gearbox?

cheers!

Split pin won't work too much freeplay, You need another roll pin or a same sized nut 'n bolt.

Does the clutch feel the same? Holding the pedal down all that time might've exposed a fluid leak.

Zoiks!

Sounds like it could be a hydraulic issue? Try operating the clutch and see if it feels the same as it did before.

Does it go into the gears OK when the engine isn't running then?

well ive been playing around and it seems to be all ok but just wont go into 1st and when it does just gets stuck

so all i can think is the split pin is hiting somthing (i hope)

i took engine out metro other week so hopfuly i can find the pin that some out!

thing is befor i did clutch it had a split pin in it! becuase it had alot of free play so i put a roll pin in it whn i put it back together was making me think maybe theres reason it had the split pin in becuase the roll pin i put in came out going down road :) might try open the roll pin a bit make it fit tighter

cheers all!

They're only a quid for a new one from Minispares IIRC. I bought two last week :)

Seems odd that the roll pin came out, but if it was a second hand one I guess it could be a sloppy fit. As you said, try opening it out a bit to make it tighter.

Hi there,

r u sure that the clutch isn't done?(hope not,really hope not)
your gears only "stack" or they crunch on upshifts or downshifts, too?

Once you have put the new roll pin through, cut one leg off a long split pin and stick it through the roll pin. Bend both ends right over keeping the whole thing as compact as possible, that'll stop it coming out. It probably is this, it's actually very hard to select or deselect gears (particularly first for some reason) without using the gearstick. Just using the small selector rod emerging form the box by hand is really tough so with slack in the selector system it will be hard work.
