Hello everyone. Seems like a few people are having problems and breaking down at the moment....

Right i'll get to the point. For the last 6 months or so i've had problems with the gearbox/clutch were it is really hard to put it into gear... This comes and goes time to time... (no gear problems when car ignition is off).

Lately it's been getting worse. Gear crunches when going into reverse and first, also when slowing down into second. so embarrassing. lol

The other day i drove it to brighton and the gears were terrrible also cutting out when coming to a stop with the clutch to the floor and the break pedal pressed. (had to rev the engine to keep it from stopping). the day after i was driving home from a mates when i slowed down for some traffic lights and it got stuck in second gear... drove home in second... :)

Now it's sat on the drive-way broken down.

What's the obvious thing it could be!!! Clutch, Hydraulics, slave cylinder..

I need to know before i spend a small fortune in a garage.

Please help as i've read so many other posts about clutchs but nothing really matches.

Sx

Hi Tango1300,

i had the same problem...
my clutch failed and did 210km :) in 4th gear to return home,
i purchased a new clutch kit,and my gears still crunch(2nd & 3rd on upshift,2nd on downshift,even 1st when i'm not moving  )
Well i'm going to change the hole engine(other problems too, short diff etc etc.)
if u can also check the gears because i think that they are worn...

Right...

I've taken tango to a garage.... they say it's the gear linkage...

1) is this an easy job to fix?
2) would that really course the problems as stated above?

Hi Tango,

Is this something you want to tackle yourself or just something you want to know what the problem is before you part with your hard earned for someone else to fix?

Fortunatley it does sound like a problem selecting gears as opposed to something wrong with the gearbox itself. Did the garage give you any more specifics on what they meant?

In those 3 years have you ever changed the clutch fluid or bled the system? That would be my first port of call. Dan mentions the clutch release bearing, this too is 'relatively' easy to replace or it could be as simple as checking and adjusting your return stop gap. Do you have a Hayne's? The 'fault finding' sections in there are very helpful.

hi thanks for your reply :-

I would love to do this myself... no labour cost involved. I need to know whats wrong so i can buy the right parts and not go n buy clutch and gearbox if there ok. The garage didn't say much else infact i'm going to get a second opinion.

The clutch fluid has been changed i beleive. !!!

I do have a haynes manual but there's so many possibilities.

Cheers.
