ok started striping my front subby as the previous paint i used didnt stick that long..

anyway whats best way to go about things? i have removed most of the old paint, but should i take it back to bear metal??

  • Primer??
  • Paint??
sorry if this has been discussed before, i did try searching before hand...

HI Yes I would bare metal it then METAL READY then POR 15 all available from FROST.

As front subbys hardly ever rust for some mysterious reason, I wouldn't bother going down the expensive POR15 route, just a coat of etch primer on bare metal and then a couple of coats of hammerite smooth black or chassis black would be perfectly good. Don't go down the powdercoating route unless you're wanting a concourse finish, it tends to chip and water creeps under it.

might just use hammerite if its expensive

A guy on scottishmini.,co.uk recommended that to me, and says iits the muts nuts

u just couple of coats with that then paint it and never worry about it agan....sounds decent if u ask me...

I used Hammerite smooth black on my rear subframe, its "apply to rust" , thought I wouldnt go as far as trusting that, I just rubbed the rust back to sound metal, and then just sanded the whole lot with 80 grit then painted it.

Hammerite does tend to be abit brittal for rear subframes though.

hello sorry if i sound daft but do you lot use celluose paint over the top of por 15 on subbys, or will it get beaten up and flake?

No just paint it on and forget it just seen one of my old minis which i painted the rear sub frame and it still looks as good as the day i painted it have a look at this link this was done with it
