hi all

well if you remember me i used to post here asking all sorts of questions regarding the respary of my mini in cellulose paint. well as some of you now know i have crashed it! :- and im going to start rebuilding it now! so....

i was very impressed with the way my mini came out in cellulose with rattle cans from halfords! (a good few people were very impressed!) however just over a month later and the paint started to look pants! i could spot a deafult on every pannel! i primered and sanded top coat and sanded and then laquered and sanded i did every propper! however the paint looked C**p after just a month!!

anyways so here i am wanting to start again from scratch! i think i want to do 2pk this time.

can i spray 2pk at home in the garage? what needs to be done to the car before it goes on? i see some people are shot blasting theres!? does 2pk need a laquer? is it any harder to spray than cellulose? where can i get it? will i still need primer etc ? if so does it have to be a special one for 2pk? is 2pk going to be more expensive that cellulose?

considering i have next to no money (bloody students!) what would you experianced guys recomend i do?

or would it just be worth saving up for years to get it professionaly done? aaagggghhh this is where i need your help cause i want the mini on the road asap!

any more help or advice that you can give me please please please please please please do!!!?

oh and just to let you know i do already have a compressor, 2 spray guns and an air brush.

many many many thanks for any help or advice you can give me! cheers phil.

if you want to spray 2 pack paint i seriously recommend getting a proper repiratory mask with an external airfeed, otherwise you'll feel ill for ages, as 2 pack contains iso-cyanides.

apart from that, you can get 2 pack paint at any paint factors, check your yellow pages under paints, varnish and lacquer. The supplier can give you good advice too. There is a proper primer to use as well, again best to speak to your local paint specialist.

The other alternative is acrylic based paint, which is almost as hard wearing as 2 pack, doesnt make you as ill, and is as easy to spray as cellulose paint. I use acrylic paint quite a lot, never had a problem with it but make sure the surfaces are absolutely spotless and properly degreased and dried.

After you done your paint job, and got it shiny, dont put any polish on for about 2 weeks, as the paint wont fully harden until then. You could probably get away with polishing it up sooner, but thats what i do and never get any problems.

you'll get the acrylic from the same paint suppliers. goes on in the same way as cellulose, primer, colour coats and then lacquer.

its just easier than 2 pack and you got less chance of dying. plus your neighbours wont notice the smell so much.

get a decent face mask, you dont need anything full on with acrylic paint, just something with replaceable filters in. useful for other things as well (they do charcoal filters, great if someone left a horrible smell in the toilet!)

any decent tool suppliers can order respiratory gear. sealey do a really nice kit, you just connect it to your air compressor and it comes with full face mask, all the air filters etc.

i just use a twin filter mask, looks like a gas mask from a war film. it has an organic compund filter and a carbon filter in it.

i got that from a company called metalflake, in horsham, west sussex.

personally, i would say save up and get a professional job done if you want it to look right and last

good point. by the time you have bought all the gear, and paint, plus some extra paint for the :P ups (trust me you'll need it) you could have got someone to do it for you.

most bodyshops will let you do all the prep work which is bloody hard work, and it needs to be perfect for the paint to look good, but doing that will mean the respray would cost not much more than buying the spraying gear.

although there is that feeling of satisfaction when someone admires your paintwork, and you say 'i done that myself'.
