1990 Studio2 998
All original Disk brakes w/servo
Have a front brake issue that is giving me fits.
Mini sits for 24 hours
Drive approximately 2 miles
Apply brakes, loud grinding from front o/s wheel. Is def speed related. Sounds like metal to metal and like the disk is warped
Grinding continues for about 5 more miles then disappears for the rest of the day.
Drive every day and no noise.
Park for one day and the same noise again.
Have had the shop look it over 3 times. found no problems
Just passed Mot.
Happens mostly when humid or after it has rained over night.
Any thoughts?

The disc stone guard shields are usually to blame for the metal on metal scraping noise. They can also make a horrible resonating tone when you're engine is ticking over too.
Just get them removed completely because they cause more problems than the worth of it.
Then see how you get on.
Worst scenario is a sticking calliper piston or bearing?

Leave it parked for a day and then play around with the wheels whilst its on stands, then you can locate the noise to an exact spot and check the bearings for play
My guards made funky noises when I changed the disks but it was constant, it doesnt seem to make sense that they would move after the car had been sitting for a day ? You will soon see if it is them though when you do the above.

we've got a corsa van at work which does this everytime its parked up. Just put it down to poor pads etc as the mechanics of the van are sound.

Especially when the weather is quite humid as it is at the moment, all cars will get a flash of surface rust on the brake discs when left for a day or so. With some cars the sound is more noticeable than others and this can be largely down to the pad compund. The first few brake applications will strip the rust off. On my Mitsubishi it's very loud indeed some mornings. That all applies if you are talking about noise under braking as I assume you are, if you are talking about constant noise then it is odd that the noise comes and goes like this. Lots of people do without the disc water shield because they can be a cause of these issues as Taffy said. They get stones trapped behind them and that causes the noise. Do you have a gravel drive? Or do you drive over a freshly surfaced road in that first 2 miles? I suspect the pattern of the noise occuring after parking is just a coincidence.

Yes, the shop said the same thing. Took it in while it was making the noise and they could find nothing wrong. Cleaned the brakes and test drove it, still had the noise. Drove it yesterday from Norwich to Peterbough and back 148 miles not a noise! drove it today and no noise. Will let it sit tommorow and try it again Sat. Drives me a bit round the bend. I'm in agreement with Taffy 1967 about the sticking caliper. Seems the only way it could do this. The grinding starts the first time I apply the brakes then continues to grind without applying brakes for about five miles. Might explain the sitting for one day. Will take down the caliper next weekend and check. Many thanks to all that replied. Good info!!! Will let you know what I find. Also, any good places to buy calipers / brake pads?
