I need new contact points but whats the difference with 54d etc? what would i need for an 85 mayfair? ...

I don't know which would be correct for a Mayfair. However, the 54D, 45D, 25D, etc. are different models of dizzys that have been used over the years. If you look on the side of the distributor you should find the model number cast in to the housing. There will also be a 5 digit number (probably beginning with "4" ) which completely identifies the model and application. If you find another group of 3 or 4 numbers strung together, those are the production dates of the distributor in week-year format.
